As a resident in counseling under the supervision of Thomas Lamp, I am active in helping individuals suffering from addiction, depression, anxiety, etc. I strive to provide my clients with a safe and respectful environment where they can feel free to be open and honest with me. My area of focus is with clients ages 11-19 as well as adults. I offer individual counseling, group therapy, and family counseling.

I believe clients are afflicted by various thoughts or a single recurring thought (cognitive) that manifests in negative actions (behavioral). My therapeutic orientation is Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT); however, I believe techniques can be applied from various orientations such as Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Gestalt Therapy. Additionally, I utilize relaxing techniques such as mindfulness meditation to help soothe clients who are feeling uneasy or anxious about a certain event or situation in their lives.

I received my Master of Arts degree in Mental Health Counseling from Marymount University. As an intern for Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic, I was able to begin my counseling career by listening to youths discuss their personal issues of addiction, ADHD, mood disorders, etc. I received my National Certified Counselor (NCC) status to aid individuals in a therapeutic atmosphere.

For more than 20 years, I have helped adults, adolescents and their families to improve their lives through counseling. In my perspective, counseling is a process in which client and counselor work cooperatively on mutually agreed goals, towards client’s betterment and emotional health.

My counseling philosophy is integrative and strength-based. As such, I integrate different counseling perspectives into my practice. Therefore, I may focus on clients’ cognitions, the emotions that may be experienced, or behaviors and how to change them. Additionally, the strengths a client brings into the counseling setting, and the areas for growth, are incorporated into the treatment plan. Thus, my counseling approach is eclectic and rooted in theories such as, Cognitive-behavioral, Psychodynamic, Resiliency, and Stages of Change, among others.

I received a Bachelors in Psychology from the Catholic University in Lima, Perú, a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland and a Doctor in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University. In addition, I hold a Masters in Addiction Counseling and a Certification in Substance Abuse Counseling from Virginia. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Virginia and Maryland. My bilingualism —Spanish-English—allows me to work efficiently with clients who speak either language.
